THOMASVILLE – It has been a tough 2024 campaign for this very young Brookwood Warriors football team. On Friday night, the Warriors lost their fifth straight game in a 39-0 loss to Southland Academy. It was their second straight shut out loss.
“I think all of our coaches and players are extremely disappointed in our performance,” said Brookwood head coach Shane Boggs. “We are an extremely young team, but we’re capable of playing better than that.”
Boggs made the problems the Warriors are facing pretty clear. They can’t overcome penalties, they’re not winning the first drive, there is a severe lack of consistency and they aren’t winning one on one match ups.
“It’s been three weeks since we won the first drive. You’ve got to win the first drive. We’ve got to build some positive momentum,” Boggs said. “We really just need consistency.”
The one bright spot the Warriors did see was the points total. Though they lost 39-0, it is the fewest points they’ve given up all season. It’s definitely a good thing, but not something that even nearly satisfies Boggs, his defensive coaches or his team.
“You know, at times I’ve seen improvement in every phase, but I don’t think our defensive coaches would tell you they’re pleased with that,” Boggs said. “We had multiple opportunities to get them off the field and figure out a way to give up a big play when we have them in medium to long yardage. I think we’ve seen temporary improvements, but we need to improve on a larger scale.”
What Boggs does feel confident about is Brookwood’s approach. As he said, there is no need to “overhaul” the system.
“One more thing I’ve learned over the years is that when you’re struggling sometimes there’s a voice that says change everything,” Boggs said. “I just think that’s the furthest thing from what we need. We don’t need to overhaul our systems we just need to continue to build a foundation and strive for consistency. Strive for growth.”
The Warriors will continue searching for their first win of the season as they begin a long home stand with Frederica Academy this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
