Lace up your walking shoes and head out to Bonita Lakes this Sunday afternoon, Oct. 13, for the annual Meridian Walk for Diabetes.
Hosted by the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi, the walk will offer fun festivities for the entire family. Registration and activities will begin at 1 p.m. with the 1-mile fun run/walk and 3-mile walk starting at 2 p.m. The registration fee is $30.
Participants are encouraged to form a team with their family, friends, co-workers, classmates, sports teams, Sunday school class or civic groups and come out and walk to bring attention to diabetes awareness.
The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support every child, adult and family in the state touched by type 1 and type 2 diabetes through education, medical assistance, support, advocacy and research.
Meridian’s walk at Bonita Lakes this Sunday is one of four planned across the state, including in Jackson, Hattiesburg and Panola County in north Mississippi.
All money raised through the walks will stay in Mississippi to help fund educational and assistance programs for those living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, including We Care 2, Diabetes On Call, patient super conference and Camp Kandu, a camp for children with diabetes, according to the foundation website.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a tailgate chair, cooler, sunscreen, water bottle and comfortable walking shoes to the Diabetes Walk. Individuals with diabetes are encouraged to bring emergency supplies. Teams are allowed to bring tents to set up prior to the walk.
So far, the Meridian walk has raised more than $5,800 of its $30,000 goal, according to the Diabetes foundation website.
