PLATTSBURGH — After nine days of early voting in this year’s New York state primary, voters will have one more chance today when they can visit the polls to cast their ballots.
Polls are open today from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. throughout the City of Plattsburgh, and in Moriah in Essex County.
“Polling places that are traditionally open for the general election in the city are open for this one,” Clinton County Board of Elections Republican Commissioner David Souliere IV said.
There are three primary races in the City of Plattsburgh Democratic Party, and one in the Town of Moriah Republican Party in Essex County. There are no primaries in Franklin County.
In the City of Plattsburgh, there is a primary in the mayor’s race as well as in Wards 3 and 6 for the Common Council.
In the mayor’s race, Wendell Hughes, a Clinton County legislator is running against Daniel Lennon, a local attorney. The winner will face Republican Don Kasprzak, a former mayor and city councilor, in the general election in November.
In Ward 3, incumbent Elizabeth Gibbs is running against current Mayor Chris Rosenquest. Rosenquest opted not to run for mayor, but instead opted to run for a seat on the council.
In Ward 6, incumbent Jeff Moore is running against Amy Collin.
Early voting for the primary started on June 15 and ran nine days until June 23.
A total of 279 voters showed up during the nine days of early voting in the city, Souliere said. There were also 166 absentee ballots sent in as of Monday.
Absentee ballots can still arrive for seven days after the election as long as they are postmarked by June 25, Souliere said.
There are about 4,600 eligible Democratic Party voters in the city.
In voting today, in Wards 1 and 2, voters can go to the OLVA parish center on South Catherine Street, Ward 3 voting is at the SUNY Plattsburgh Field House, Ward 4 is at the First Assembly of God parish center on Prospect Avenue and Wards 5 and 6 vote at the Clinton County Government Center at 137 Margaret St.
There is only one primary in Essex County. It is a Republican primary in the Town of Moriah for an unexpired Town Council term.
James Curren and Mark Lashway are squaring off in that race.
In early voting in that race, only 43 people voted, and there were 12 absentee ballots sent in. There are 1,522 eligible voters in that race.
Voters can go vote in Moriah today at the fire station at 630 Tarbell Rd. in Moriah.
