Swampscott 10, Marblehead 9: The Big Blue pulled off the upset of the young North Shore spring season, ending Marblehead’s 62-game win streak within the Northeastern Conference by racing out to a 7-3 halftime lead under the lights at home and holding off a furious charge by the visitors in the final quarter.
Goaltender Timmy Sheehan had 13 saves for the win in net, while Chase Russo led the offense with three goals. Liam Keaney and Jack Hazell both added two with one assist, John Von Barta had one of each, and Carson Palmer and Jason Rothwell also scored. Captains Max Field, Palmer and Hazell all had huge games with fellow captain Drew McCathern sidelined, while Jack Duffy on defense, Luke Michigan facing off, Russo and Von Barta all had terrific games as freshmen.
Marblehead (1-2 overall) got three goals and an assist from Gio Garibotto, two goals each from Reece Moore and Cam Waldman, one tally from Jack Whipple, a goal and three assists from Charlie Grenier, and assists from Chris Tardie, Will Sullivan and Drew Nelson.
Ipswich 13, Lynnfield 10: Spreading the scoring around, the Tigers stayed unbeaten at 5-0 thanks to five tallies and one assist from Will Harrington and some great faceoff and ground ball work from Louie Harrington. Jayson Clapp produced three goals, Luke Wile two, and Finn Wright, Charlie Elder (2 assists) and Chris Burns (2 assists) one snipe apiece for the winners. Nolan Hickey came up with four saves in the cage, and defender Will Gromko held one of Lynnfield’s best players off the scoresheet.
Danvers 13, Gloucester 7: Sean Rivard had four goals and three assists while Evan Roach won 15 faceoffs to give the Falcons (2-1) an impressive win over their arch rivals. Connor Harvey scored three times, Cam Lacroix-Hilz twice, and Brady Tersolo (3 assists), Tommy Cyr (2 assists), Jake Ryan (2 assists) and Cooper Dunham (2 assists) each added single goals. Ryan Rogers picked up the win in net with eight saves.
Peabody 8, Salem 5: Captain Johnny Lucas scored three times and picked up a team-best six ground balls while goalie Aiden Haight stopped nine shots in the Tanners’ road victory. Matt Bettencourt added two goals for the winners (now 1-2), who also got a goal and an assist each from Jaden Kritikos and Antonio Anzalone, a single score from Donnie Cavanaugh, and one assist apiece from Brandon Berone and Derek Collins (who also had 4 GB’s).
Freshman goalie Vincent Milano made 20 saves for Salem (now 2-1), which had a late comeback attempt in the fourth quarter come up just short. Mikey Curtin scored three times with one ground ball; Matt Rosa had a goal and nine faceoff wins; Jake Lister also had a goal and two ground balls; and both Fionn Coughlin (ground ball) and Max Levine Steine (3 ground balls) each had one assist. Andreas Bernal and Roman Stein added three and two GBs apiece, respectively.
St. John’s Prep 13, Malden Catholic 3: Brady Scudder (3 goals, assist) and Dan Cahill (2 goals, assist) led the Eagles offensively while Danny Magoon and Sebastian Froeb did so defensively as their team improved to 3-0. Other goal scorers were Will Crawford (2), Drew Klein, Mathias Tolo, Nolan Convey, Bo Minogue, Josh Barton, and Michael Quigley, with Jackson Quigley (2), Deuce Morton and Jimmy Nardone picking up assists. Goalies Austin Kitces (1 save), Max Putney (4 saves) and Mattheus DuPlessis (2 saves) shared the victory in net.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Peabody 18, Salem 1: Brooke Lomasney’s four goals and three assists led the Tanners to an easy win. Madi Barrett (3 goals, 2 assists), Sophia Kassis (2 goals), Sydney Angland (2 goals), Ally Bettencourt (goal, 2 assists), Connie Patturelli (goal), Elizabeth Moore (goal), Avani Ingham (goal) and Brianna Symonds (goal) also found the scoresheet, while goalie Caitlin Snow had four saves.
Swampscott 16, Marblehead 9: Sophia Ciciotti scored five times with one assist while Avery Laundry had four goals with two helpers as the Big Blue ran their record to 4-0. Coco Clopton added three goals and an assist; Cecelia Tripp found the back of the net twice; Samantha Demady and Victoria Pierro each had one goal; and goaltender Lilah Caplan made three saves.
The Magicians (now 0-3) got 16 saves from goaltender Molly Bullard and a team-high four goals from Gretchen Smith, who added one assist, one interception and one ground ball. Maddie Forbes (2 goals, assist, 7 draws, 3 ground balls), Kathryn Commoss (2 goals, assist, ground ball), Ramona Gillett (goal, 2 assists, 5 draws, 2 ground balls) and Courtney Hoguet (2 caused turnovers, 2 ground balls) were other standouts for Marblehead.
Beverly 14, Winthrop 3: The Panthers (3-2) had little trouble in winning their third straight. Lauren Caley had four goals in her return to the lineup, with Lily Shea scoring three times, Jossy Silva twice, Samatha Sprissler once to go with three assists, and Lindsay Kaszynski, Annabelle Miller, Sasha Miller, and Jenna Schweizer adding solo tallies. Goalie Madeline Reynolds made four saves to earn the win.
Ipswich 16, Lynnfield 7: Allie Wile scored five times with one assist and caused six turnovers as the Tigers took care of business. Estelle Gromko and Lyla Greenleaf both had two goals and one assist, with Ella Stein and Lucy Winthrop also scoring twice. Halle Greenleaf (assist), Jayne Krause and Taryn Desmond were the other goal scorers for IHS, which saw Emma Paquette make six saves in net while Faith Hauenstein caused five turnovers.
Masconomet 15, Saugus 2: Mia Marques took four shots, and the freshman scored on all four to power the Chieftains to a blowout win. Ava Gauvain notched three markers, Sofia Farmer and Caitlin Driscoll each added two, who got solo goals from Aili LaMarca, Violet Malinkowski, Genevieve Clapp, and Kaeley Forde.
Landmark 10, Waring 2: Dahlia Beltramini had both goals for the Wolf Pack.
VOLLEYBALL
St. John’s Prep 3, Catholic Memorial 0: The Eagles had a team hitting percentage of .411 and 28 total aces in their 25-10, 25-7, 25-7 triumph.
BOYS TRACK
Newburyport 97.5, Essex Tech 41.5: Paul Danehy won the discus and nearly set a new Hawks record with a toss of 119-feet-7 1/2 inches while Jayeck Gosselin was second in the discus with a personal best of 114-feet-7-inches.
GIRLS TRACK
Newburyport 88, Essex Tech 51: Maci Abbatessa smashed her own school discus record with a throw of 99-feet-3-inches and also won the shot put at 35-3 to highlight things for the Hawks. Nora Kiesel also won the 100 (12.88), Olivia Feudo picked up second in both hte 400 (64.65) and 200 (28.28) and Brooke Medico was second in the triple jump at 31-feet-even.
