The Chatsworth-Murray County Public Library has some great new books that I’d like to share with you this summer. And if you frequent the Dalton-Whitfield County or Calhoun-Gordon County branches we can put them in transit to you for free if you have a PINES library card.
“How to Build a Treehouse” is a practical guide to building your dream treehouse, even if you’ve never picked up a saw. Packed with expert advice and illustrated with clear step-by-step drawings, this book covers everything you need to know to create the perfect treetop hideaway. In addition to carpentry techniques, the authors describe methods that have proved their worth in more than 200 treehouse projects of every shape and size that they have built over the years.
If outdoor grilling is your game, “Ed Mitchell’s Barbeque” is right up your alley. Mitchell has been cooking whole-hog barbecue the traditional way since he was a teenager. Regarded as the most famous pitmaster in North Carolina, his book contains techniques and recipes for pork, beef, biscuits, cornbread, grits, vegetables and much more. Tuck in with your family this summer and dine on Rooter-to-Tooter Pork Chops, Ed’s Shindig Slaw and finish with I’ll Always Love My Mama Pecan Pie.
“Safe and Sound: A Renter-Friendly Guide to Home Repair’’ contains guidance for more than 50 simple home maintenance projects such as replacing your shower head, safely hanging things on your walls, patching small and medium drywall holes, and troubleshooting a faulty garbage disposal. It contains advice tailored to renters to minimize permanent changes and helpful illustrations and QR code links to videos to help you on your journey. If you’ve ever felt panicked about opening your home to strangers in order to fix a maintenance issue, this book is for you.
And as summer days drift away to those summer nights, bring out “Stargazing: Photographs of the Night Sky from the Archives of NASA.” The book is a guided tour of the night sky’s most extraordinary phenomena, from radiant star fields to awe-inspiring lunar eclipses. You’ll encounter familiar constellations up close and witness the otherworldly elegance of the aurora borealis. Each photo is paired with a fascinating caption about the scientific phenomena it reveals and the technology used to capture it. Rediscover the wonder of looking up.
A free PINES library card can be acquired at any of our branches. Just bring a picture ID and proof of your current address and you’re all set. If you are under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must be present to get a card. See you at the library!
Brian Latour is the branch manager of the Chatsworth-Murray County Public Library.
