MOULTRIE – Ten years go today, on August 23, 2014, the Colquitt County football team defeated Mill Creek 31-14 in the season-opening Corky Kell Classic at McEachern High School.
It was the first of 30 straight victories for the Packers.
The 2014 Packers went on to go 15-0 and defeated Archer High 28-24 in the Georgia Dome for Colquitt County’s first state championship since 1994.
The Packers duplicated the effort in 2015, again going 15-0 by defeating Roswell 30-13 in the state championship game.
The first win in that streak started at 11:30 a.m. on a brutally hot day in Powder Springs.
Junior quarterback Chase Parrish, in his first varsity start, completed 19-of-29 passes for 254 yards and a touchdown.
Senior Sihiem King carried the football 24 times for 113 yards and another touchdown.
The Packers trailed at the half 14-10, but after Ty Lee returned the second-half kickoff 55 yards to the Mill Creek 40, the Packers drove to a go-ahead touchdown.
On a second-and-goal from the Hawks 12, Parrish threw to Kiel Pollard, who held on after the ball bounced several times, once off his helmet.
He finally cradled the ball and got one foot in the end zone for the touchdown.
Baby Lou Martinez added the extra point, the Packers held the lead and were off on a remarkable two-year run in Georgia’s highest classification.
