State officials are fielding development proposals for Schoellkopf Hall at DeVeaux Woods.
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced Friday that it has released a request for expressions of interest for the adaptive reuse of the building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The move follows $2 million in work conducted by state parks to stabilize the building including asbestos and lead abatement, structural shoring and temporary roofing.
State officials launched a similar effort to find a development partner in 2012.
The building, located on the grounds of DeVeaux Woods State Park off Lewiston Road, formerly served as a dormitory for Niagara University and a former orphanage and military school dating back to 1853. It is also previously served as the headquarters building for the Niagara Region administration of state parks. The park abuts Whirlpool State Park and the Niagara Gorge Trails and is approximately a mile from the boundaries of Niagara Falls State Park.
The 36,000-square-foot building is currently empty and has electric service. As part of the final redevelopment, state parks will contribute $2 million toward the installation of all necessary utilities and parking.
Copies of the request for expressions of interest are available by visiting: https://www.nyscr.ny.gov/. Interested applicants are asked to arrange tours of the building by contacting concessions@parks.ny.gov. Responses are due by Nov. 13.
