A sole Republican candidate was nominated by the Cumberland County Republican Party to represent the party for the 7th District Board of Education vacancy in the Nov. 5 General and Municipal Election.
Jonathan A. Matthews, a resident of Bear Creek Rd. in the 7th District, was nominated by the Republican Party after it held a caucus earlier this month.
No Democratic or independent candidates applied for the seat.
The vacancy on the BOE occurred after Rebecca Hamby resigned from the position.
The Cumberland County Election Commission met Sept. 11 to certify petitions for the Nov. 5 General and Municipal Election.
Matthews was vetted by the Republican Party and his petition was certified. Matthews’ name will be the only one on the ballot for the 7th District BOE seat.
The petitions for six candidates for two seats on the Crossville City Council were also approved, as well as candidates for city of Crab Orchard alderman and mayor and a town of Pleasant Hill council member. There are two seats open for Pleasant Hill, but only one candidate applied. The other seat will have to be appointed by the council.
The election commission also reviewed 187 new voter registration applications out of a total of 1,069 over the past 10 months. The election commission is required to review a minimum of 10% of new voter registration applications.
A sampling of applications from new residents included people who moved to Cumberland County from Utah, Vermont, Nebraska, California, New York and Illinois.
There are two council seats open in each municipal election.
Crossville City Council candidates include incumbent Rob Harrison, who is being challenged by former city mayors J.H. Graham III and James Mayberry, as well as former council member Danny R. Wyatt and newcomers Kristopher George Kade Cole and Mark A. Fox.
Crab Orchard Mayor Emmett H. Sherrill is facing opposition from Michael Findley and Racheal Hansen.
Candidates for Crab Orchard aldermen are Winona Christopher and Todd Kemmer.
Douglas Borko is the lone candidate seeking election to Pleasant Hill Town Council.
The election commission also verified and locked ballot bags and ballot boxes for the Nov. 5 General and Municipal Election.
