The Gloucester baseball team has been rolling right along this spring — and the Fishermen continued to steer their ship in the right direction against Winthrop on Wednesday afternoon.
Fresh off a walk-off victory over Beverly earlier this week, head coach Rory Gentile’s group secured a convincing 10-0 home win in six innings, improving to a perfect 8-0 in the process.
“We took some time to get going today and that’s not a habit we want to get into,” admitted Gentile. “But to be 8-0 is an undeniable honor and we won’t take it lightly. It’s a sign that hard work pays off, so we need to continue to work harder.”
Starting pitcher Brayden Francis, a senior, went the distance on the mound, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out 10. He’s been nails on the bump this year and shows no signs of slowing down.
Offensively, Gloucester’s big blow came via one swing of the bat from Jaylen Severino. The junior standout mashed a grand slam in the fourth inning to make it a 6-0 game before teammate Matt Smith joined the party with a solo home run of his own later in the contest. Charlie Amero, Andrew Cribbs, Trey Marrone, Giacomo Martell and Lukas Albano all hit safely in the win as well.
Needing just two more wins to officially punch their Division 3 state tournament ticket, the Fishermen will now turn their attention to Springfield Central for a road matchup on Friday afternoon (4 p.m.).
“We are looking forward to it,” said Gentile.
