As the cherished legend goes, in the fourth century the monk we know as St. Nick ventured into the dark night to secretly fill poverty-stricken children’s shoes with coins and goodies. This holiday season we can follow in his charitable footsteps by lacing up our own shoes to support our northern Michigan neighbors.
Lace up on Dec. 7 to take your love of outdoor fun to the streets of Bellaire where you can spread “Jolly Joy” in support of Bellaire Public Schools cross-country program. The third-annual 5K Elf Run/Walk route winds through the small-town streets decked in their finest holiday décor lighting joy around every bend.
Don a festive costume and join the Traverse City Track Club for the 5K Jingle Bell Run/Walk on Dec.22. The Jingle Bell course weaves through festive downtown neighborhoods. Finishers are warmed in body and spirit, sharing cookies and cocoa and knowing they contributed to a good cause. About 500 modern St. Nicks typically join the run benefitting Traverse City Track Club’s Golden Shoe Fund program. The Club partners with area running coaches and stores to provide athletes in grades 3 through 12 with new running shoes supporting their program participation.
If the slopes are your happy place, channel your inner St. Nick at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville. All lift ticket sales on Dec. 14 benefit Benzie Area Christian Neighbors. BACN serves 50 families every day. Families with limited resources receive help with food, clothing, finances, education and social support.
Downhill fans can show their giving spirit and receive a gift for themselves on Dec. 15 at Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls. The first annual Santa Sunday rewards skiers and boarders who hit the slopes dressed as Santa, Mrs. Claus or the Grinch with a discounted lift ticket, plus a free ski day valid between Dec. 16 – 25. The event benefits Brother Dan’s Food Pantry and hot lunch program in Petoskey. The nondenominational outreach program promises all a warm welcome and listening ear, as St. Nick himself might offer.
So, cozy up in your warm gear this December and help wrap our neighbors in the love, care and the joy of community.
