MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA — A man who was trapped inside his pickup truck after it rolled over on Route 128 Wednesday morning was taken to the hospital.
Manchester-by-the-Sea police and fire units responded to a 4:49 a.m. report of a rollover crash on the southbound lanes of Route 128 just south of Pine Street.
The driver of the pickup that rolled over was entrapped before being freed by rescue personnel after about 20 minutes. With the assistance of Manchester Fire officials, the man was transported by Beauport Ambulance to Beverly Hospital.
Manchester Fire Chief James “Jake” McNeilly described the driver as a middle-aged man and said the pickup was lying on its side in the median when rescue crews arrived.
The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, he said.
“The roads were very slick and icy this morning,” McNeilly said. “Responding apparatus also noticed slippery conditions.”
Units responding the scene included McNeilly, Manchester Police, Ladder 1, Ambulance 1 and Car 2. Massachusetts State Police, the Massachusetts Department of Public Works and a Todisco Towing crew also responded to the crash.
A fire engine from the Wenham Fire Department that was initially requested for additional assistance was later canceled. A Hamilton Fire engine crew provided coverage at the Manchester Fire station during the incident.
Manchester fire officials said this crash response underscores the importance of the department’s training efforts, as firefighters have recently completed a session on auto extraction.
