The Rotary Club of Dalton is joining Rotary clubs all over the world to help build modular homes for families in Ukraine whose living conditions have been affected by the war.
A prefabricated, modular home that accommodates two adults and two children costs $12,500 and includes a living area, kitchen, bathroom, bunk beds and heat provided through a ceramic wall unit. The Rotary Club of Dalton raised $14,125, enough to cover the cost of a home and the additional cost of adding solar panels.
“These homes are beautifully equipped,” Rotarian Drayton Sanders said. “It’s just a small thing to build one, but it’s something to help these people who are incredibly brave.”
Rotary clubs worldwide have helped build more than 90 modular homes for families living in inadequate shelters or those who have been displaced to neighboring countries and looking to return to Ukraine. Small and lightweight, the modular units are manufactured in Ukraine, giving the added benefit of creating jobs locally, and are expected to be temporary housing. Once a family has rebuilt their own home, the unit is then passed on to another family in need.
“Our goal was to provide a home families can find rest in while rebuilding their lives,” Sanders said. “It’s a special thing to be a part of this international effort.”
