TIFTON — Tifton and Tift County are preparing for a countywide reassessment of property tax values.
Hayward Becton of the Tift County Board of Assessors came before Tifton City Council this month, announcing that Georgia Mass Appraisal Solutions and Services would be conducting a mass property tax reassessment during the next year.
Becton said a reevaluation of the entire county is required following the adjustments caused by the real estate market boom two years ago.
Silas Hrobar, a representative of GMAS, said starting this month appraisers will go door-to-door, first in the city then working outward, measuring and reviewing every parcel in the county.
Hrobar said appraisers would be easily identifiable through their lanyards and vests, as well as the trucks they would be driving, but mentioned their information and descriptions had also been sent to the city and county for reference should any residents have concerns.
Councilman Jack Polk asked if it is possible some residents who saw a rise in property tax during the last reassessment would see another, and while Hrobar admitted it is possible, the actual rates people would see would likely vary across the county, based on what sales indicate.
Hrobar estimated the appraisal process would not be finished until close to the end of the year.
