MIDLAND — Glen Lake and Traverse City St. Francis are deep in the hunt after the first day of the Division 4 varsity boys tennis state finals at Midland Tennis Center.
Holland Christian leads with 21 points after Monday’s action, but Glen Lake is just a point behind with 20. St. Francis is in fourth with 15 points, tied with Berrien Springs and a point behind Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett.
In one-singles, both Glen Lake’s Colebrook Sutherland and St. Francis’ Owen Jackson reached the quarterfinals where they squared off one on one.
Sutherland took the first set, 6-4, but Jackson responded with two set wins at 6-2 and 6-2 to take the match and advance to the semifinals Tuesday. Jackson, the No. 2 seed, will take on third-seeded Lansing Christian’s Stephen Gollapalli.
In two-singles, it was Glen Lake’s Hawthorn Sutherland taking on St. Francis’s Eli Schmude in a battle between the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds in the quarters.
Schmude took the first set, 6-3, but Sutherland came back to win the next two, 6-4 and 6-2. Sutherland will battle No. 1 seed Jack Holt of Grand Rapids West Catholic in the semifinal.
Michael Houtteman, the top seed in the three-singles bracket, breezed through the competition to earn a spot in Tuesday’s semis. Houtteman knocked off Lansing Catholic’s Dominic Perez in the quarterfinals, 6-0 and 6-1, and will meet University Liggett’s Yurii Polnyi in the semis.
St. Francis’ Carson Poole lost in the second round at three-singles after his first-round win over Williamston’s Mitch Belloli, 6-0 and 6-2.
Glen Lake will also have a representative in the four-singles semifinals. Ben Selby took down Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard’s Joseph Stout, 6-2 and 6-3, in the quarters to earn a spot against No. 1 seed Nico Grosso of Holland Christian on Tuesday.
St. Francis’ Luke Davis also reached the quarters of the four-singles bracket, but he lost to Berrien Springs’ Ethan Tripp, 6-1 and 6-1.
Glen Lake’s Ben Romzek and Oliver Mitchell as well as St. Francis’s Max King and David Ansley both made it to the quarterfinals of the one-doubles bracket, but neither team will see play Tuesday.
Romzek and Mitchell fell to Holland Christian’s Henry Langejans and Lucas VanWieren, 6-2 and 6-2. King and Ansley lost to Grosse Ile’s Nick Naso and Eli Randles, 7-5 and 7-5.
Bryce Cundiff and Andrew Schopieray will represent Glen Lake in the semifinals of the two-doubles bracket. The Laker tandem defeated Allegan’s Joe Sosnowski and Adam Mozery, who beat St. Francis’ William Gibbons and Will Suttons in the second round, in the quarters, 6-2 and 6-2.
In three-doubles, St. Francis’ Casey Jackson and Brady Thelen have eyes on state gold as they’ll battle University Liggett’s Charlie Laethem and Peter Laethem in the semifinals. Jackson and Thelen knocked out Portland’s Gavin Beckett and Vander Nye in the quarters, 6-2 and 6-1.
Glen Lake’s William Krusel and Porter Martin also reached the quarterfinals, but they lost to Jackson Lumen Christi’s TJ O’Neil and Chase Schirmacher, 6-3 and 6-1.
No Lakers or Gladiators will vie for a four-doubles state championship.
Glen Lake’s Kyra Lamb and Owen Pierce lost to Kalamazoo Central’s Ian Riggs and George Haan in the quarters by a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 final. St. Francis’ Joel LaDuke and Tristan Durkin also fell in the quarterfinals, losing to University’s Liggett’s Davis Ford and Lucas Ferguson, 6-2 and 7-6.
Semifinal action begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday with the championship finals set to start at 1:30 p.m. at the Midland Tennis Center.
