BELLAIRE — Traverse City Central’s boys skiers came out of the gates swinging with a big early-season Big North Conference win.
The Trojan boys used impressive depth, especially in the slalom, to win the season’s first BNC meet at Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire.
Traverse City West’s girls won that side of the meet. The Titans are the defending Division 1 state champions for both boys and girls.
“This season has been off to a crazy start,” Central coach Amy Kudary said. “Not enough snow, then too much snow. Today was the first day in gates for many of our athletes, so I’m incredibly proud of how both the boys and girls skied. For the boys to come out with a win today is just an awesome way to start the season. We have goals. Big goals, and I think we’re well on our way.”
Central’s boys won with 42 points to West’s 83, followed by Petoskey (85), Cadillac (107) and Gaylord (157).
The Titan girls posted a meet-best score of 56, followed by Central (77), Cadillac (90), Petoskey (107) and Gaylord (144).
TC West’s Caleb Lewandowski won both the slalom and giant slalom, with Central’s Rocco Elkins second in GS and Didier Ramoie runner-up in slalom. The Trojans put six skiers in the top 10 in slalom, with Jace Rowell (fourth), Asher Paul (sixth), Cooper Gerber (eighth), Elkins (ninth) and Trevor Suttle (10th). The remainder of the top 10 in slalom were Gaylord’s Keaton Abraham (third), Petoskey’s Gavin Galbraith (fifth) and Cadillac’s Brady Koenig (seventh).
Dane Lewandowski (fifth) and Grady Eliis (ninth) also represented TC West in the GS top 10, along with Rowell (third), Koenig (fourth), Abraham (sixth), Galbraith (seventh), Ramoie (eighth) and Petoskey’s Taylor Keiswetter (10th).
Petoskey’s Marley Spence won both slalom and GS titles, delivering all four individual titles to the reigning Record-Eagle Skiers of the Year.
The top three in both disciplines were identical, with Spence followed by TC Central’s Quinn Gerber and Cadillac’s Onlee Wallis.
The rest of the GS top 10 was all West and Central, with the Titans putting Lila Warren (fourth), Olivia Bageris (seventh), Sarah Shapiro (eighth) and Avery Plummer (ninth) in there, and the Trojans having Erinn Hale (fifth), Kellan Kudary (sixth) and Fiona Colliver (10th).
Avery Meyer joined Viking teammate Wallis in the top 10, taking fourth, and Gaylord’s Clover Hamilton placed 10th. The rest of the top 10 was all TC West with Bageris (fifth), Plummer (sixth), Warren (seventh), Ellie Gruber (eighth) and Dillyn Mohr (ninth).
