Ryan Brewer won’t return as Hanceville’s football coach next season.
Principal Daniel Wakefield confirmed the change in a phone call with The Times on Monday.
“With the big picture of what we are trying to accomplish I just decided that going in a different direction is what’s best for Hanceville at this time,” Wakefield said. “We appreciate coach Brewer’s time at Hanceville and wish him and his family nothing but the best moving forward with whatever they decide to do.”
Hired in June of 2021, Brewer led the Bulldogs to an 11-19 record in three seasons.
Hanceville won four games in each of its past two campaigns, coming within a couple of yards of snapping the program’s lengthy postseason drought — the Bulldogs haven’t made the playoffs since 2013 — in 2022.
Brewer arrived at Hanceville after spending the 2020 season as wide receivers coach at Orange Beach. He also served previously as the offensive coordinator at Haleyville (2017-18) and Russellville (2014-16).
The Bulldogs will now look for their fifth head coach since 2015.
“We’d like to have someone hired in by the first of the year,” Wakefield said. “We’re looking for someone to build on the past three years, represent our school and community in a good way and just be in a situation where we can have winning seasons and some playoff berths.”
Hanceville is the second area school to have its head coaching position come open. West Point is searching for a replacement for Don Farley, who stepped down after 11 seasons leading the Warriors.
