FROSTBURG — A predawn fire on Lee Street killed a 58-year-old woman Sunday, the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal said.
A team of deputy state fire marshals and the County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit continue to investigate the cause of the blaze at 16 Lee St. that was reported to the Allegany County 911 Center about 6:55 a.m. by the victim, who reported a fire in front of her home.
The fire likely started in a first-floor bedroom, investigators said. It had not been determined if the home had working smoke alarms.
Part of the two-story structure collapsed due to the extensive fire, investigators said.
Firefighters were hampered in the firefighting effort by low pressure from hydrants in the area.
“Our hearts are with the Frostburg community after a tough morning,” Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray said. “Please keep them in your thoughts, especially at this time of year.”
The identity of the victim was not released. She will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine exact cause of death and positive identity.
Potomac Edison and Columbia Gas crews also responded to the scene.
Frostburg Police and the Allegany County Fire Police assisted with traffic control.
