PERU —Veteran Peru baseball coach Brian Marino reached a milestone on Thursday.
The Nighthawks recorded a 10-4 victory over Saranac in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play, with Marino picking up his 200th varsity coaching win at the school.
Donnie Mitchell pitched five innings to get the win and combined with Landen Duprey for seven strikeouts.
“We were able to play errorless baseball tonight behind Donnie and came up with big plays when we needed,” Marino said. “Donnie pitched well and gave us a solid outing on the mound.”
Duprey hit his seventh home run of the season to get Peru going in the first inning.
The Nighthawks then took a commanding lead with six runs in the bottom of the fourth on base hits by Deacon Whitmarsh, Trenton Taylor, Mitchell, Kalib Smith and Jake Frechette, along with Duprey’s sacrifice fly.
Smith, Zack Engstrom, Frechette, Gabe Moore and Whitmarsh all accounted for two hits each for Peru. Engstrom scored three runs, while Duprey, Frechette and Mitchell each drove in two runs.
Alex Clancy had two singles for the Spartans, while losing pitcher Seth Petrashune added a triple, and Adrian Barnes and Robbie Squier doubles.
