Every year the Effingham County 40 & 8, V-1439 presents Nurse’s Training Scholarships to select Effingham County High School Seniors. This year one student was at Altamont High School and one was at Beecher City High School.
Altamont Senior Ava Hollinshead and Beecher City Senior Marissa Janae Summers received their scholarships from Chef de Gare (Commander) Ralph Rounds. The scholarships which are normally $1,200 over three years but due to a generous donation from the Effingham County Marine Corps League the scholarships are now $3,000.
The scholarships were named as a “Memorial Scholarships” to honor deceased members of the Effingham Co 40 & 8.
This year the scholarships were named for D.R. Caldwell and John W. Schimmelpfenning. Hollinshead received the scholarship that was named for D.R. Caldwell served in the United States Marines.
Mr. Caldwell would help organize the M&M Candy Days and other events. D.R. was a 10+ year member of the 40 & 8.
Summers’ scholarship was named for John W. Schimmelpfenning. John served in the United States Army. His service in the 40 & 8 included being chairman of the Nurse’s Training Scholarship Committee and serving a Chef de Gare (commander).
Ava is planning on attending Kaskaskia Community College and is the daughter of Neil & Stacey Hollinshead. Marissa is planning on attending Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and is the daughter of Aaron & Jamie Summers. These two young ladies are the 117th & 118th scholarship recipients of the Nurse’s Training Scholarship. The members of V-1439 offer their best wishes to Ava and Marissa for great success.
