NORTH MANKATO — DFL Sen. Nick Frentz, of North Mankato, will be among 93 Minnesota delegates to the Democratic National Convention this year.
The DNC is slated to take place Aug. 19-22 in Chicago.
This will be Frentz’s first time serving as a delegate after receiving a request from the Biden campaign through state party leadership.
He said the main thing he’s looking forward to is bringing the voice of the district to the process.
“I think southern Minnesota in general, and the Mankato region in particular, deserve to have a voice at the national convention,” he said.
Frentz told The Free Press earlier this week that he is supporting Vice President Kamala Harris following President Joe Biden’s announcement of leaving the race.
“I think as a prosecutor, as a senator and as a vice president, she’s done a great job and I think she’s ready to step into the role of president,” he said.
“I also think the country would get a great benefit out of having the first woman president.”
Frentz added that he’s proud of the work that Biden has done in his four years in office.
Frentz said he has not heard of any Minnesota delegates to the national convention openly planning to support anyone except Harris at this point.
Minnesota Public Radio reported Monday that more than half of Minnesota delegates to the DNC want Harris to be their presidential nominee.
They reported that as of 8 p.m. Monday, 55 delegates said they would vote for Harris.
Fifteen said they were either unsure, not willing to say or favored an open debate within the party as to who the nominee is. The rest were not available to offer immediate reaction, they reported.
