PLATTSBURGH — The 1-2 punch of Hailey Monroe and Keira Mackey accounted for 49 points on Saturday as Section II’s Northville defeated Boquet Valley, 60-30, in NYSPHSAA Class D regional final play at Clinton Community College.
Monroe scored 29 points and Mackey added 20, including four three-pointers, as the Falcons (20-3) continued to build on their lead as the game went on while advancing to the state Final Four this weekend.
“I’d put her (Monroe) in the caliber of Saranac’s Brenna Ducatte,” Boquet Valley coach Terry Pulsifer Jr. said. “She’s just got ice in her veins.
“When she gets out on the court, it’s all ball. That’s it. That’s the only thing she thinks about, and it kind of shows. She’s really worked hard at it.”
Northville held a 14-7 lead after one on the Section VII champions (16-8), but outscored the Griffins, 22-7, in the second quarter for a 36-14 advantage at the half.
The Falcons, who have only eight players on their teams, closed the first half on a 12-2 run.
“It was just the pressure and, honestly, it was a lot of lazy passing on our inbounds,” Pulsifer Jr. said. “I think we gave up eight quick points on the inbound plays.
“You take those away and your take a few of our missed layups…we missed quite a few. We’ve had an issue shooting all season. It kind of showed tonight, and it’s the wrong night for it to show up.”
Ella Lobdell led the Griffins with 11 points, while Claire Reynolds added seven and Charlene Orciani six.
“Ella’s been our distributor all year long,” Pulsifer Jr. said. “She digs hard. Ella tries to get in there and create open space. They kind of feed off Ella’s energy.”
Pulsifer Jr. now looks ahead to next season.
“I start two juniors and two sophomores as it is right now,” he said. “But replacing the 20 points per game by Ella is going to be difficult. We’re going to have to find a couple of my juniors, maybe, to step up and hit some baskets.
“Also, I’ve got two sophomores and an eighth-grader, so we’ve got a younger roster. I was fortunate to have a full roster of 12 girls this year. I’m losing three seniors, so that’s going to hurt, but we’ll see what we can do to replace them with the underclassmen.”
