Lockport City Clerk Sarah K. Lanzo is resigning from her post as of Aug. 12. In a letter addressed to Mayor John Lombardi III, she wrote that it ”was not an easy decision,” but she would no longer be working for the City of Lockport.
Citing an “exciting opportunity” at a nonprofit in her letter, Lanzo said later that working for the city was her first government job, a wonderful way to give back and, “an amazing experience.”
Lanzo is a graduate from Lockport High School and went on to SUNY Niagara, formerly known as Niagara County Community College, as well as Niagara University for degrees in communication. She also acquired a masters degree at Medaille College in organizational leadership.
Former mayor Michelle Roman hired Lanzo after coming in contact with her work at city hall. At the time, Lanzo was advocating for an ADA bathroom at city hall. Later, Roman saw Lanzo at the city’s gardenwalk and told her of the opportunity to work as city clerk.
Lanzo came into the position shortly after Paul Oates left the city’s employment as a retiree.
“I will be around,” Lanzo said, because she does live in Lockport and considers it home. “And I told the mayor I will support in the transition anyway I can.”
Lanzo also wanted to thank everybody working at the city and that it was a learning experience that she benefited from every day, but it was an opportunity she couldn’t miss. This is the first time she will be working outside of Niagara County.
“It’s time for the next chapter,” she said.
