The Triton softball team is off to a good start.
The back-to-back CAL Kinney champions are fresh off a run to the Division 3 Semifinals last year, and have the talent to get back to the same spot. On a beautiful Monday afternoon, the Vikings went up to Lynnfield and came away with a season-opening, 6-4, win.
Junior Emma Penniman, our reigning Daily News Softball MVP, was in midseason form, going the distance in the circle while striking out 11. Both Kyla Story and Mallory Johnson had clutch hits for the Vikings, who jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning, and held on late to hold off a scrappy Pioneer squad.
Georgetown baseball wins marathon
Early on this spring, the Georgetown baseball team has already flexed quite the “clutch gene.”
That showed itself in a big way on Monday afternoon, when the Royals got a ton of timely plays to win a 10-inning marathon game over Lowell Catholic, 6-5. Ty Gilmore was the face behind a lot of them, as the junior not only pitched seven innings of relief with just one earned runs and 9 strikeouts, but also delivered a two-out, 2-run triple in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 5-5.
Then in the bottom of the 10th, returning Daily News All-Star Jake Gilbo ripped an RBI-single to score Brendan Loewen for the win. Jake Gilstein had a pair of hits, and Carter Lucido was credited with making a handful of great plays at first base.
And this came after Georgetown (2-0) won its season-opener over the weekend as well.
Traveling over to play Mystic Valley, the Royals only needed five innings to earn a 15-4, mercy-rule victory. Gilmore was also fantastic in that one, going 3-for-3 with a home run and a triple, and the trio of Lucido, Ethan Lee and Jason Gioia each had two hits.
Georgetown softball wins big
It was a stress-free victory for the Georgetown softball team, which opened its season on Monday with a 22-2 romp of Rockport in five innings. Maddie Grant with 2-for-3 with four RBI, Ellie Barbarick went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Ava Fair went an impressive 4-for-5 with three RBI as well.
Talya Mariani (2-or-4, 2 RBI) and Gillien Figueroa (1-for-2, 2 RBI) also had strong games for the Royals.
