You always need your senior captains to step up: Something that Josh Hersey has already done multiple times this winter for the Triton hockey team.
And Monday afternoon was another such example.
Hersey assisted on the opening two goals of the game, then scored a pair of his own to lead Triton past visiting Beverly, 5-1. The Vikings (9-4-0) have now won two in a row, and on Tuesday morning came in at No. 8 in the latest MIAA Division 3 rankings.
His two assists were to fellow senior captain Luke Sullivan, and Mason Colby was behind the final goal for Triton. Both Michael Taylor and Alex Pasquini also had assists for the Vikings, who will travel over to play Pentucket on Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Rink (4 p.m.).
Pentucket hockey drops a heartbreaker
This one was tough to stomach for the Pentucket hockey team.
After a rough three-week stretch, the Panthers switched up their three lines and certainly seemed to find something with back-to-back wins over Saint Bernard’s and Rockport. And on Monday afternoon, it appeared headed for three in a row after goals from Sam Escobar and Reese King put the Panthers up 2-0 early in the second period.
But unfortunately, they couldn’t close it out.
Visiting Boston Latin Academy forced the game into overtime, then was able to find the winner during the extra session to complete the 3-2 comeback victory over Pentucket (5-7-0).
Newburyport girls hockey can’t hold lead
The Newburyport girls hockey team wants this one back.
After exploding for three goals during the second period of Monday’s game, the Clippers were in position to earn a nice road win down at Newton North. But the Clippers weren’t able to locate an insurance goal over the final 15 minutes, and the host Tigers would find the back of the net twice during the third period to skate away with a 4-3 victory.
Holly Sullivan scored twice and had an assist for Newburyport (4-6-1), while Olivia Wilson netted the other goal and assisted on both of Sullivan’s. Elsewhere for the Clippers, both Delaney Belanger and Mackenzie Riley also had assists.
