NORTH MANKATO — American Legion Post 518 will fly a flag in October in honor of Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Edward Legg.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, members will gather at Wheeler Park in lower North Mankato to begin the monthlong tribute.
Legg was born July 22, 1932, in rural Lake Crystal. He attended schools in Lake Crystal and later farmed and was a service technician for Sears. Helen “Marie” Wray and he were married May 10, 1954.
Legg joined the Navy in February of 1951. After basic training in Illinois, he went on to Naval training centers in Florida, Tennessee and Virginia. He served as a radioman from 1951 to 1955. He served with VC-7 Squadron as an aviation electronics technician and was assigned to naval air stations in Norfolk, Pak River, Port Lyautey and French Morocco and with flight crews on the aircraft carriers, USS Bennington, USS Coral Sea, USS Randolph and USS Lake Champlain. His second stint as a radio instructor was from 1958 till his discharge on Aug. 3, 1960.
He attended 15 VC-7 Navy Squadron reunions and was a member of Lake Crystal American Legion Post 294.
Legg died July 19, 2017, in Mankato. He is buried in Lake Crystal Cemetery.
His survivors include four children, 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
