Jocelin Hunter, a senior at West High School in Knoxville, TN was selected to receive a $2,500 STAR scholarship from the Philanthropic Educational Organization Sisterhood. She was recommended by P.E.O. Chapter S of Knoxville, TN, and received the scholarship from the P.E.O. Chapter AT of Fairfield Glade, TN.
The P.E.O. STAR scholarship was established in 2009 to provide scholarships for exceptional women in their final year of high school to attend an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the U.S. or Canada in the next academic year. The competitive STAR scholarship is for women who exhibit excellence in leadership, academics, extracurricular activities, community service and potential for future success.
Hunter has too many achievements during her short high school career to mention all but the most recent include Founder and President of the West High community club, whose volunteers work at food pantries and in the West High garden.
Hunter is also President of the West High environmental club which tends and plants produce in the West High garden to donate to the food pantry, a member of three different honor societies and the student council. She has held internships in Political Science at UTK and with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
One of Hunter’s many achievements is her certification in Computer Aided Design (CAD) with her ultimate goal to become a mechanical or aerospace engineer.
Chapter AT has been a part of the Fairfield Glade community since it was organized in 1998.
P.E.O. has been celebrating women helping women reach for the stars for more than 155 years. In addition to the educational philanthropies, the P.E.O. Sisterhood provides a framework of support and community for all members.
What started with a bond of friendship among seven women in Mount Pleasant, IA, is now one of the oldest women’s organizations in North America with close to 5,500 chapters.
