Homestead and Martin elementary schools came up big Tuesday night when they won their semifinal matches of the Cumberland County Basketball Tournament at Stone Memorial High School. The final round set up rival games with two of the top teams in the county.
The girls’ and boys’ championship games were after our Chronicle deadline and took place Jan. 11 at SMHS.
The Homestead girls had little trouble with South Cumberland, picking up a surprisingly easy 47-13 victory.
Bella Wyatt came up big for Homestead with 11 points. Emma Smith contributed nine points and Ella Jane May had 6.
Alyssa Poore had four points to lead South Cumberland in the loss. Sadie Swafford contributed three.
The Homestead boys had a little tougher time in their semifinal match with Pleasant Hill. Homestead made a late surge to grab the 46-38 win.
Shaffer Sitton led Homestead in scoring with 28 points. Griffin Templeton scored 10.
Jayden Lanier has 16 points in the loss for Plesant Hill. He got help from Kannon Smith with 12 points and Slade Sears contributed eight points.
The Martin Elementary School girls rushed to a 48-13 win over Stone Elementary School in the second semifinal game.
Olivia Futtrell set the pace for Martin with 14 points, and Carlie Killeen contributed 11 points. Vadyn Bosanko had nine points to lead Stone.
In the final boys semifinal, Martin took down North Cumberland 48-34. Tristan Futtrell scored 16 points and Carson Dennis scored 13 in the win. Clay Reeves had 11 points for North and Racer Flynn scored five.
