Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity recently recognized the dedicated individuals who make a significant impact on the organization’s mission of building safe and affordable housing for families in need.
During the annual Volunteer Appreciation Event, one of the highlights was the presentation of the Volunteer of the Year to Crossville’s Chuck and Sharon Elgin.
“Chuck and Sharon, as Volunteers of the Year, epitomize the selfless spirit that drives Habitat for Humanity’s mission, and their contributions are deeply appreciated by the entire organization,” said Habitat Director Vanessa Petty.
“We look forward to another year of community involvement, volunteer dedication, and building homes alongside inspiring individuals like Chuck and Sharon,” she added.
“Together, they are making a significant difference in the lives of those we serve.”
Petty said the Elgins embody the spirit of volunteerism and selfless service, making a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals and families in need of safe and affordable housing.
The dinner, hosted and served by Habitat staff members, was attended by more than 80 people at Central Baptist Church in Crossville.
Staff members presented several individualized awards to volunteers they chose to recognize for their efforts.
Sharon Elgin, who serves as a ReStore volunteer cashier, has been a crucial part of the Habitat team, Petty said.
“Her warm and welcoming demeanor has not only brightened the days of ReStore customers but has also made her an integral part of the ReStore family,” she added.
Petty said Sharon’s commitment to her role goes far beyond the cash register; she brings passion and a genuine desire to serve others with her.
Not only does she handle the busiest shift on Saturdays with unwavering professionalism, but she goes the extra mile filling in for other volunteers when needed and ensuring our ReStore remains a welcoming place for customers and a vital source of funding for Habitat’s housing ministry.
But Sharon’s generosity doesn’t stop there. In her spare time, she volunteers to help price and sort donations.
“Sharon’s willingness to step in during challenging times, her unwavering professionalism, and her meticulous attention to detail inspire us all,” Petty added.
Habitat Director of Construction Brian Sohl called Chuck Elgin’s contributions to the organization “nothing short of extraordinary.”
Sohl compared Chuck’s dedication to Habitat to the to the well-worn work boots that Chuck carries to the worksite every day — he has weathered countless years as well as countless hours of hard labor.
“They are a simple but meaningful symbol of his passion and unwavering work ethic,” Sohl said.
During the event, Petty told the couple their commitment to Habitat has not gone unnoticed.
“You both embody the spirit of volunteerism and selfless service, and you have made a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals and families,” she said.
“You are the heart and soul of our organization, and we are grateful for your dedication.”
Petty added. “As Volunteers of the Year, Chuck and Sharon, you are setting an example for all of us to follow.
“Your passion, dedication, and kindness inspire us every day, and we are proud to have you as part of our Habitat for Humanity family.”
