CAMILLA — In a game defined by its gritty defensive play, Georgia Christian School’s football team overcame Westwood School on Friday night with a commanding second half performance, winning 28-0.
The first half was a defensive standoff, as both teams remained scoreless heading into halftime, largely due to standout plays by the Generals’ defense.
Benji Galindo forced a crucial fumble, recovered by Cam White, and the defense recorded numerous tackles for loss. A potentially game-changing 75-yard breakaway run by a Westwood player was halted at the 10-yard line thanks to a heroic chase-down tackle, preventing a touchdown. The defense held strong, stopping Westwood on fourth down and keeping them off the scoreboard.
The second half belonged to the Generals.
Hayden Coats set the tone on the first play of the third quarter, intercepting a pass from the Westwood quarterback. Georgia Christian seized control from there, with Tyson Copeland catching the game’s only receiving touchdown to put the Generals on the board. Carson Hanks powered the ground game with 88 rushing yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Briceten Gaines added a rushing touchdown of his own.
Galindo capped off the night with a game-sealing pick-six in the fourth quarter, ensuring the victory. The Generals’ defense was relentless, led by James Frazier and Rowan Lawson, who each had 9 tackles and a combined 5 tackles for loss. Galindo, Coats, and Bo Miller added 7, 8, and 8 tackles, respectively.
With three interceptions and a fumble recovery, the Generals’ defense proved to be the decisive factor in the game.
With this win, the Georgia Christian Generals continue their undefeated streak and further cement their reputation as a defensive powerhouse this season.
They will take on Grace Christian in Bainbridge Friday, Sept. 20th.
