BASEBALL
Salem 5, Saugus 1: Senior righty and captain Riley Fenerty came within one out of a no-hitter but Saugus’ Danny Zeitz hit a solo homer with two down in the seventh to play spoiler. Still, the Witches (5-5) emerged victorious with Fenerty striking out eight with no walks. Kevin Soto hit a 2-run blast, his first varsity homer, and totaled four RBI while Rocco Ryan and Corey Grimes both clubbed doubles.
Pingree 4, Middlesex 3: Drew Mullaney knocked in a run with two outs in the sixth, Quinn Moses delivered a 2-run single to put the Highlanders (8-2) ahead and Jaylon Richardson nailed down a save in a comeback victory. Moses stole three bases on the day while Hudson Weidman, Calvin Zimmerman and Tejas Prakash contributed hits.
St. John’s Prep 4, Lawrence 3: Aidan Driscoll hit a solo homer and Gavin Gold, Cam LaGrassa and Will Shaheen posted two hits each to help St. John’s (5-6) get back in the win column. The Eagles scored two in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie and Anthony Romano (4 1/3 innings) and Braeden Hurley combined for 10 strikeouts.
Marblehead 5, Gloucester 3 (12 innings): Greyson Leventhal’s RBI single in the top of the 12th broke a 3-3 tie and Aidan Downey added an insurance run with an RBI double as the Magicians improved to 7-4. Charlie Sachs had a double and an RBI, Stef Shepard also doubled and Brooks Keefe earned his first win by striking out four over 3 1/3 frames in extra innings. Chris Cannuscio was near Herculean for MHS, fanning seven over 8 2/3.
Lynn Classical 6, Danvers 4: The Falcons (3-6) couldn’t rally at home under the lights despite Adrian Lopez having a 2-for-2 day with a double and two runs scored. Noah DiChiara had the other base hit for Danvers and Beckett Wodarski and Brendan Glowik combined for a dozen strikeouts.
St. Mary’s Lynn 8, Bishop Fenwick 3: Henry VanFassen struck out seven in an admirable relief appearance but the Crusaders (5-6) couldn’t get one over on their CCL rivals. Odin Garron doubled and drove in a run while Josh Scali also hit a two-bagger and Anthony Herbert had a single with an RBI.
SOFTBALL
Marblehead 1, Saugus 0: Tessa Francis struck out 12 and allowed a mere two hits with no walks and the Magicians (9-2) scored the game’s only run when Francis doubled in pinch-runner Anna Sokolov (who entered when Ruby Calienes doubled). Calienes, Haily Schmitt and Francis all had two hits for Marblehead.
Gloucester 2, Danvers 0: Skylar Coakley was the tough luck loser for the Falcons (6-4), giving up only five hits with four strikeouts. The Falcons had on hit each from Coakley, Addi McCarty, Sammie Fay, Ava Gray and Lila Flynn but couldn’t turn them into any runs.
Beverly 5, Masconomet 0: Lidia Miedema tossed a 2-hit shutout with six strikeouts and the Panthers (9-2) remained unbeaten against NEC foes. Riley Michael had two hits including a ground rule double while Gabbi Wickeri (double), Sophia Balducci and Miedema all drove home a run.
Hamilton-Wenham 6, Manchester Essex 5: Bella Fazio doubled in the sixth inning and her sister Viola knocked her in with the tying run before Ava Day followed with the go-ahead RBI in the Generals’ comeback win. Freshman Molly Degnan went the distance with eight strikeouts, Bella Fazio was 3-for-3, Mia Broyles went 2-for-2 and eighth grader Bianca Frederickson drove in a run and scored.
BOYS TENNISSt. John’s Prep 3, Newton North 2: The No. 2 ranked Eagles (9-0) remained undefeated in a great match. Luke Free (7-6, 6-0) scored the decisive point after St. John’s swept doubles play behind Mark McDuffee/Alex Melville (6-0, 6-2) and Luke Prokopis/Boris Kouzminov (6-1, 6-0).Lynnfield 4, Swampscott 1: The Big Blue’s unbeaten first doubles team of Nick Custer and Trevor Talabian won, 6-4, 6-1.Marblehead 4, Beverly 1: Anthony Vizy won a three-setter 3-6, 6-3, 10-6, for the Magicians and Mika Garber cruised 6-1, 6-0. Marblehead took two doubles matches thanks to TK Kelly/Austin Bacon (6-2, 6-3) and Alex Boehning/Filip Wabno (6-1, 6-0).Beverly’s Zander Alexeyev won a tiebreaker, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5.GIRLS LACROSSEWaring 5, Brimmer 2: The Wolfpack (now 4-2) got two goals each from captains Mikalia Bennett and Eliza Loring and another from Lyda Simpson in their win. Sophia Vaca stopped a dozen shots in net, with defenders Sarah Patey and Caitlyn Miller also playing well.Hamilton-Wenham 17, Lynnfield 9: Evie Bernard had six goals and three assists, not to mention seven draw controls, and the Generals evened their mark at 3-3. Additional goals were scored by Laura Sabo, Avery Nistl, Stewart Bernard, Grace Glidden, Maisie Leland, and Piper Shepherd. Ava Vautour made six saves and Sophie Happel, Bizzy Ireland, and Maddie Graber shone defensively.Pentucket 19, Essex Tech 7: Goaltender Kimberly Jean Louis had 13 saves and Olivia Isidro scored two goals to pace the Hawks (now 3-6). Other goal scorers for Essex Tech were Carrie Martinez, Morgan Costa, Bella Vetrano and Gabby Adie. GIRLS TENNISDanvers 5, Saugus 0: Madison Savage (6-0, 6-0), Sophie Sanidas (6-0, 6-1) and Josie Vogel (6-0, 6-0) had singles wins for the Falcons, while Raina Langlois and Ava Nadeau (6-0, 6-2) as well as Kelly Huynh and Cali Coffin (6-1, 6-1) completed the sweep with victories in doubles.Hamilton-Wenham 5, Rockport 0: Improving to 8-0 at the midpoint of the regular season, the Generals got straight set victories from Noami Provost (6-0, 6-0), Ellie Holbrook (6-0, 6-0), Mariah Boys (6-0, 6-2), Emily McIntosh and Gabriella Jewitt (6-1, 6-1) and Angelina Meimeteas and Lina Sudachi (6-3, 6-2). For Jewitt and Sudachi, it marked their first varsity wins.Manchester Essex 3, Ipswich 2: The Tigers grabbed wins at first singles with Claire Buletza in a three-setter and second singles thanks to Abbie Allen (6-3, 7-5).Lynnfield 4, Swampscott 1: Twins Ava and Alexia O’Donnell grabbed a win for the Big Blue in doubles play, 7-5, 6-4.Marblehead 3, Beverly 2: Aofie Bresnahan and Lucia Levin won in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, to seal the deal for the Magicians (6-3). Loni Gilmore and Reese Freedman also won, 6-4, 7-5, and Sami Dosch prevailed 6-4, 6-2; the rivals collected donations for the Marblehead Food Pantry in a prematch tradition.Adeline Kontos (3-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Olivia Devereaux (6-4, 2-6, 10-8) were the winners for the Panthers (5-3).Masconomet 5, Gloucester 0: The Chieftains stayed spotless in NEC competition with wins by Teagan Skulley (6-0, 6-0), Taylor Mastrogiovanni (6-0, 6-0), Sophia Donnellan (6-0, 6-0) and Izzy Kelly/Sienna Anvari (6-0, 6-1) and Hannah Pietropaolo/Paige Hurton (6-1, 6-1).BOYS LACROSSEGloucester 13, Salem 7: In a fast, physical battle, the Witches got three goals from Mikey Curtin and three assists from Jake Lister, plus two goals apiece from Andreas Bernal and Gabe Bennett and two helpers from Fionn Coughlin. Goaltender Vincent Milano came up with a dozen saves.Pentucket 13, Essex Tech 11: In a back and forth clash that was tied both at halftime (6-6) and in the fourth quarter (10-10), the Hawks fell to 6-4 on the season despite four goals and three assists from Matthew Tavares and four more goals an two helpers from Mason Gadbois. Damian Biersteker was busy in stopping 21 shots, with teammates Tyler Hugh (2) and Mason Gadbois also scoring. Timothy Tavares, Armani Booth, Fisher Gadbois and McHugh all added solo assists.Lynnfield 16, Hamilton-Wenham 0: The Generals were blanked on the road.COLLEGE BASEBALLSalem State 15, MCLA 2: Antonio Belgrove had three of his team’s 20 hits and drove home six runs as Salem State (19-13) won in a romp. James Dolan went 4-for-5 and scored four times while Mark Smith and Jake Boucher both contributed three hits.
