HAGERSTOWN — Former Frostburg State pitcher Jack Maruskin signed with the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars, as announced by the team on Wednesday.
The Flying Boxcars are part of the Atlantic League, an independent professional baseball league that’s a partner league with Major League Baseball.
Hagerstown joined the Atlantic League last season as an expansion team and finished 36-89 overall.
MLB uses the Atlantic League to experiment with potential rule changes, but unlike in affiliated minor league baseball, the Atlantic League teams are responsible for signing their players.
Maruskin was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Baltimore Orioles in 2023, but never made it past rookie ball.
He last pitched for the West Virginia Black Bears of the MLB Draft League.
In 14 games last season, Maruskin threw 16 innings for a 3.38 ERA.
He struck out 24, walked 11 and allowed six earned runs.
Maruskin previously played for the Frederick Keys, also from the MLB Draft League and pitched 11 1/3 innings for a 3.18 ERA.
Maruskin spent five years at Frostburg and began his career in the outfield, earning second-team All-Mountain East Conference (MEC) honors as a sophomore.
After three seasons, he switched to pitching full-time as a senior.
The Flying Boxcars open the season at home against the Staten Island FerryHawks on Friday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m.
