The Fairfield Glade Police Department compiled a list of recommendations for residents to stay safe in hazardous winter conditions. To ensure the safety of residents, the FGPD suggests following these tips:
1. Dress for the Weather When Outdoors
Wear layered clothing. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, followed by an insulating layer (like fleece or wool), and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer.
Add warm accessories such as a hat, scarf, gloves and thermal socks to protect against frostbite and hypothermia. For footwear, wear waterproof boots with good insulation to help prevent cold feet and slips on icy surfaces.
2. Prepare Your Vehicle
Perform a tire check to ensure the tires are properly inflated and have sufficient tread for winter conditions. Consider switching to winter tires for better traction. Perform a battery check because cold weather can reduce battery efficiency. Regularly test the car battery and replace if necessary. Ensure the vehicle is equipped with an emergency kit that includes blankets, extra gloves, a flashlight, first-aid supplies, non-perishable snacks and a charged power bank for a phone. Regarding windshield fluid: Keep the windshield washer fluid full and use de-icer on windows before driving.
3. Prevent Slips and Falls
Shovel snow promptly. After a snowfall, clear walkways and driveways to prevent ice from forming. Use salt or sand for extra traction. Wear non-slip footwear; boots or shoes with rubber soles provide better grip. Walk cautiously, take small steps and remove hands from pockets for balance.
4. Prevent Frostbite and Hypothermia
Residents should limit exposure to outside. If possible, stay indoors during extreme cold weather. If residents must go outside, take frequent breaks in warm areas.
Cover exposed skin. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin within minutes. Protect ears, nose, cheeks and fingers.
Stay hydrated and nourished. Even in cold weather, a body needs fuel and hydration to maintain warmth. Drink warm beverages and eat high-energy foods.
5. Be Prepared for Power Outages
Keep flashlights, batteries, or lanterns on hand as backup lighting. Avoid using candles to prevent fire risks. Use space heaters safely. Never leave portable heaters unattended and keep them at least three feet away from flammable objects. Stock up on essentials. Have a supply of bottled water, non-perishable food and medications to last several days in case of an extended outage.
6. Watch for Winter Weather Alerts
Monitor the forecasts by watching the weather reports for any winter storm warnings, advisories or watches in the area. Prepare early for bad weather. If adverse weather is expected, get supplies and arrange transportation and work before conditions worsen.
7. Take Care of Your Mental Health
Shorter days and longer nights can lead to feelings of isolation or seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Combat the winter blues by staying active, socializing and getting sunlight. Even in winter, try to get outside for fresh air and exercise. A walk in the snow or skiing can lift your mood. Stay in touch with friends and family to avoid feelings of loneliness. Virtual meetups or phone calls can brighten a day. If possible, get exposed to natural light for 15 to 30 minutes a day or use a light therapy box.
8. Check On Vulnerable Individuals
Elderly individuals and those with chronic health conditions are at higher risk during winter months. Offer help with snow shoveling, transportation or ensuring they have heat and supplies. Stay in contact to make sure they’re staying warm and safe.
“Stay alert, stay prepared and enjoy the beauty of the season,” said the Fairfield Glade Police Department.
