ESSEX — In an effort to draw attention to Autism Awareness Month in April, the Essex Police Department is selling autism acceptance police patches while its officers wear them on their uniforms.
By wearing and selling the patches, Essex ppolice hope to bring acceptance and awareness of autism to the community and create an inclusive, safe space for everyone.
All proceeds from patch sales will go toward the the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism’s safety programs, which focus on keeping those affected by autism protected within their communities.
The Essex Police Department’s goal is to raise at least $1,000. Patches cost $10 each and there are limited number of patches available.
Those interested in purchasing a patch are encouraged to do so by visiting https://bit.ly/3VHOrRB. Once purchased, the patches may be picked up at the Essex Public Safety Building, 11 John Wise Ave.
“The Essex Police Department is so proud to be partnering with the Doug Flutie Foundation,” said Chief Paul Francis. “The purpose of this partnership is to raise awareness and understanding of autism and how it affects one in 36 children in the United States. Please consider giving back to such a fundamental organization by buying a patch or donating directly to the foundation.”
The Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Framingham that strives to support and empower those affected by autism. More information can be found by visiting its website, flutiefoundation.org.
