ELIZABETHTOWN — Understanding that information can be a powerful tool for those seeking a healthier lifestyle, the University of Vermont Health Network – Elizabethtown Community Hospital is sponsoring a Diabetes Fair on its Ticonderoga campus Tuesday, Nov. 12 and at its Elizabethtown facility on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day, free, non-fasting A1C testing will be offered along with a variety of educational opportunities. “We will have a number of presenters onsite and lots of educational materials related to health, wellness and prevention to share,” Jodi Gibbs, ECH quality and population health assistant, said.
From Monday, Nov. 18 through Nov. 22, free non-fasting A1C testing will be offered at all six ECH health centers from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The incidence of diabetes in Essex, Clinton and Franklin counties is among the highest in New York state, according to a 2021 report by the New York State Department of Health.
If managed improperly, diabetes can lead to several serious health complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, eye and nerve damage.
The A1C test, used to diagnose and manage diabetes, is a simple blood test that measures the average blood sugar levels over the past three months. It can help detect diabetes or pre-diabetes early and for those living with the disease, A1C checks can help manage the condition, prevent complications and improve quality of life.
“By raising awareness about diabetes and lifestyle habits that support our overall well being while reducing the risk of diabetes or prediabetes, we can make a difference in health of our community. Our Diabetes Fair is designed to provide lots of great information for everyone,” Gibbs explained.
All events are free and open to the public, no appointments necessary. Questions may be directed to Jodi Gibbs at jgibbs@ech.org or 518-585-3761.
