The state Department of Transportation plans on rebuilding Route 93 in Youngstown in 2025, with the village already planning for other work to happen alongside the roadwork.
DOT officials say the surface of Lockport Street from the Main Street intersection to the Niagara Scenic Parkway off-ramps would be targeted. It will be milled and filled with the excessive shoulder slope approaches from driveways being corrected.
The approximate project cost is $6 million, with the DOT website stating it would receive funding from federal and state sources. Approximately $2.85 million would be from the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program.
Village Engineer Robert Lannon told the village board this past month that this project can involve putting in new water lines underneath that road. Based on his discussions with the DOT, he would produce some design drawings and the DOT would fold them into their bid package for the roadway.
The old water lines have had no reported issues but with the future DOT work, Lannon figured the village should get its infrastructure in the best condition possible.
“You don’t want the DOT to reconstruct the road, then have the line break and you need to go back in,” Lannon said.
The project bid is expected to be awarded by next summer with construction starting soon afterward. While the village would pay for any new water line construction, installation would be handled by DOT contractors.
The whole project is expected to be completed in winter 2025 or early 2026.
