The members of the Dalton City Council are scheduled to vote Monday on whether to buy a new ladder truck for the fire department.
The council meets at 6 p.m. in City Hall. The meeting is open to the public and will be livestreamed on the city’s YouTube site.
The purchase of the $2.2 million truck would be made through Sourcewell, a buyers cooperative representing more than 50,000 local governments and school systems across the country.
The money for the purchase would come from funds from the four-year, $80 million Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) voters approved in May. City Administrator Andrew Parker said Friday afternoon the council members will vote Monday because the truck has a three-year lead time. The city will not pay until the truck is delivered.
A SPLOST is a 1% tax on most goods sold in a county. The money it generates can be used for capital projects and some other items but not operating expenses.
A 2020 SPLOST is for four years and has collected more than $66 million. It will expire on Sept. 30, and the new tax will start being collected on Oct. 1.
Through an intergovernmental agreement approved by local officials earlier this year, Whitfield County will receive approximately $50.144 million and the city of Dalton will receive some $26.9 million if the $80 million of the 2024 SPLOST is collected. Tunnel Hill will receive approximately $752,000 with Varnell receiving $1.696 million and Cohutta receiving about $592,000.
Under that agreement, if the SPLOST collects more than $80 million the excess money will be split with 35% to Dalton and 65% to Whitfield County.
The council members are also scheduled to vote on:
— A request by Teresa Acevedo to rezone from medium-density, single-family residential to high-density residential 0.4 of an acre at 407 Sassafras St.
— A request by Velky Reyes to rezone from heavy manufacturing to rural residential 0.21 of an acre at 512 Abigail St.
