Discover the art of crafting your personal pollinator haven and the value of using native plants to help the pollinators. Come to the Cumberland Mountain State Park Recreation Lodge on Saturday, June 15, from 1-2 p.m.
Bill Morgan, Master Gardener and board member of Obed Watershed Community Association (OWCA), will educate everyone about the value of using Tennessee native plants and how this will help pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Members of OWCA and Friends of Cumberland Mountain State Park (FCMSP) will demonstrate how to create your own pollinator container garden. You can bring your own container and potting soil, or simply observe the presentation. Either way you can get native plants to take home for a donation of $5 each.
There will be a Kids Corner where kids can draw their favorite native flower and pollinators to create a beautiful wall mural.
The event is sponsored by the FCMSP. The Friends are currently using a state grant from the Iris Fund, whose money comes from sale of state flower iris license plates to purchase plants for the park which are native to Cumberland County. The group recently planted understory shrubs and trees like azaleas, winterberry holly and choke berry along the ADA trail. They put tarps down to kill weeds and then will plant many flower plugs in the fall.
There are a limited number of plants available at the event June 15 so be sure to register your intention to attend the event at tinyurl.com/yrp53hpu.
