The SUNY Oneonta men’s soccer team fell at home to Cortland State in penalty kicks in Wednesday’s SUNYAC Semifinal match after the two sides played to a 1-1 draw.
Cortland opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Mateo Marra converted on a regulation penalty kick.
It didn’t take long for Oneonta to answer, however, as Joe Holder evened things up in the 38th minute thanks to an assist by Tommy Kliampas.
After entering halftime tied 1-1, neither team could find a breakthrough in the final 45 minutes of regulation or 20 minutes of extra time.
In the penalty shootout, Cortland converted on all five of its opportunities while Oneonta made three of four, missing its first shot off of the crossbar. Muiz Bayewu had the winning kick for Cortland.
AJ Lucas made five saves in the loss for Oneonta (11-3-4).
Elmira 2, Hartwick 0
Hartwick fell at home to Elmira 2-0 in the Empire 8 Semifinals on Wednesday.
Horacio Vicioso put Elmira on the board in the 14th minute and Jose Navea Corporan scored on a penalty kick in the second half for an insurance goal.
The Hawks finish the season with an overall record of 8-8-2.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Cortland State 2, SUNY Oneonta 1
The SUNY Oneonta women couldn’t maintain a fast start in Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to Cortland State in the SUNYAC Semifinals.
Keira Dashnow opened the scoring early for Oneonta as she needed just 89 seconds to find the back of the net with a headed goal. Sara Kealey provided the assist.
But Cortland regained its composure quickly and scored twice in quick succession on goals by Piper Klammer in the 12th minute and Tyla Vuotto in the 16th minute. The second goal stood up for the remainder of the game as Cortland advanced to the title game.
Bryanna Meehan came up with eight saves for Oneonta in the loss.
The Red Dragons end the year at 6-10-1 overall.
FIELD HOCKEY
SUNY New Paltz 2, SUNY Oneonta 1
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to SUNY New Paltz in the SUNYAC Semifinals.
After a scoreless first half, Sophia Bronzi got New Paltz on the board in the third quarter.
Oneonta’s Erin Clark tied the game early in the fourth with an unassisted goal. But Miranda Britton scored the winner for New Paltz 10 minutes later as Oneonta was unable to find the tying goal.
Maura Leib was outstanding in goal for the Red Dragons, finishing with 12 saves in the losing effort. Oneonta wraps up the season with a record of 9-9.
