BEMIDJI — Malik Willingham scored on a runner with 15 seconds to play, and No. 2-rated Minnesota State defeated Bemidji State 94-92 in overtime in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men’s basketball game Friday.
The Mavericks trailed by 10 in the first half but drew even at 42 by halftime. Minnesota State led 80-77 with three minutes to play, but Bemidji State used a 9-0 run to lead by six with 1:05 remaining.
Malik Willingham scored 28 points, making four 3-pointers and going 6 of 6 at the free-throw line.
Justin Eagins scored 16 points to go with six assists, and Kyreese Willingham added 13 points. Elijah Hazekamp had 12 points and nine rebounds, and Dylan Peeters had 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Mavericks (15-0, 9-0 in Northern Sun) play at Minnesota Crookston on Saturday.
Women’s basketball: The Mavericks scored the first 12 points of the game and defeated Bemidji State 79-51 in a Northern Sun game at Bemidji.
Destinee Bursch led the Mavericks with 20 points, becoming the 25th player in team history to reach 1,000 points in a career. She also had 10 rebounds.
Emily Herzberg had 12 points and eight rebounds, and Natalie Bremer scored 10 points.
The Mavericks (11-4, 8-1) play at Minnesota Crookston on Saturday.
Women’s hockey: The Mavericks scored twice in the first period and defeated No. 8 St. Cloud State 2-1 in a WCHA game at St. Cloud.
The Mavericks were swept by St. Cloud State in October at Mankato.
Whitney Tuttle opened the scoring midway through the first period, and a couple minutes later, Claire Vekich scored, assisted by Jessica Boland.
Minnesota State, which has won eight of the last 10 games, had 32 shots on goal. Hailey Hanson made 25 saves to get her first career win.
The Mavericks (10-12-0, 4-11-0 in WCHA) plays at St. Cloud State again Saturday.
Wrestling: Isaiah Mlsna won by technical fall in 5:38 at 149 pounds, but the Mavericks lost 22-14 to Minot State in a Northern Sun dual at Bresnan Arena.
At 141, Minnesota State’s Trayton Anderson won 2-0. Drake Heyward picked up a 10-4 win at 174. Gavin Christoffersen won 5-0 at 184.
The Mavericks host Mary on Saturday at Bresnan Arena.

Women’s hockey: Hailey Holland scored two goals as the Gusties defeated St. Benedict’s 4-1 in an MIAC game at St. Cloud.
Kylie Scott and Lily Mortenson each added a goal for Gustavus.
Katie McCoy made 21 saves in the victory, while the Gusties had 34 shots on goal.
The Gusties (10-2, 7-0 in MIAC) hosts St. Benedict’s on Saturday at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

Men’s basketball: Xavier Patterson had 17 points, six rebounds and six assists in the Vikings’ 76-71 win over Minnesota Morris in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference game at Morris.
Drew Sagedahl added 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Dominik Bangu scored 12 points, and Mason Ackley and Jax Madson had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Bethany (12-3, 4-0 in UMAC) plays Saturday at Crown.
Women’s basketball: The Vikings led by 11 in the second quarter, but Minnesota Morris came back for a 67-51 UMAC win at Morris.
Lexiss Trygg led the Vikings with 15 points and six rebounds, while Aubrea Kor had 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
Bethany committed 30 turnovers.
The Vikings (2-13, 2-2) play at Crown on Saturday.
