MINOT, N.D. — No. 5 Minot State made four free throws in the final eight seconds to defeat Minnesota State 75-72 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men’s basketball game Saturday.
The Mavericks led 72-68 with 54 seconds to play.
Kyreese Willingham had 26 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots, and Harrison Braudis scored 20 points with seven rebounds.
The Mavericks, who were down 10 in the first half, shot 42.6% from the field but made only 4 of 19 from 3-point range.
Minnesota State (9-7, 5-3 in Northern Sun) hosts Bemidji State on Friday and Minnesota Crookston on Saturday.
Women’s hockey: Jessie McPherson made 21 saves as the Mavericks defeated Lindenwood 4-1 in a nonconference game at St. Charles, Missouri.
The Mavericks put 37 shots on goal.
Lauren Goldsworthy, Alexis Paddington, Taylor Otremba and Jamie Nelson each scored a goal.
The Mavericks (10-9-1, 4-9-1 in WCHA) play a conference series at No. 1- ranked Wisconsin on Friday and Saturday.
Women’s basketball: Minnesota State outscored Minot State 36-22 in the third quarter and rolled to an 85-78 victory in a Northern Sun game at Minot State.
Natalie Bremer led Minnesota State, which scored 60 points in the second half, with 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Destinee Bursch scored 14 points, and Rhyan Holmgren had 11 points, three rebounds and two steals. Adeline Kent had 10 points.
The Mavericks shot 29.7% in the first half and 68.8% in the second half.
The Mavericks (13-2, 9-0) plays Bemidji State on Friday at Bresnan Arena.
Wrestling: Isaiah Mlsna and Kaleb Lochner each took first place as Minnesota State competed in the Central Under Armour Invitational at Pella, Iowa.
In the Gold Bracket, Mlsna went 4-0 at 149 pounds, defeating Karson Casper of Augsburg 7-5 in the finals. Lochner placed first at 165 in the Silver Bracket, also going 4-0. He defeated Kaleb Cordova (unattached) 7-2 in the finals.
Kain Sanders placed third in the Gold Bracket at 149 pounds, and Cael Morrow placed third at 125 in the Silver Bracket.
The Mavericks have a dual meet on Sunday against Mary at Bismarck, North Dakota.
Gustavus Adolphus
Men’s basketball: The Gusties’ six-game winning streak ended with an 80-64 nonconference loss at Dubuque.
Carson Koch led the Gusties with 12 points off the bench, and Myles Barnette added 10 points, also in a reserve role.
Brady Kienitz made three 3-pointers, passing Gustavus Athletics Hall of Famer Tim Brown (2002-04) for seventh place on the program’s career 3-pointers made list. Kienitz has 135 career 3-pointers.
Gustavus (9-3) returns to MIAC play on Wednesday, playing at Macalester.
Women’s basketball: Emma Kniefel scored 14 points as the Gusties defeated St. Catherine 52-41 in an MIAC game at St. Paul.
Izzy Quick hauled in 10 rebounds.
Gustavus (11-0, 4-0 in MIAC) plays at Macalester on Wednesday.
