February is American Heart Month, and Cardiovascular Institute of the South is hosting a free cardiovascular screening on Tuesday, Feb. 13, to bring awareness to the risks for heart disease.
The screening will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the north Meridian clinic, located at 4909 Great River Drive.
Guests will receive a complimentary electrocardiogram and blood pressure screening.
An EKG is a painless test that records the electrical signals of the heart. It can detect blockages, the thickness of the heart wall, past heart attacks and more. Results from the test will be reviewed on site by nurse practitioner Lauren Kemp.
Cardiovascular disease claims more lives than all forms of cancer combined, according to a CIS press release. Mississippi and Louisiana both rank in the top five states for heart disease death rates.
In recent years, cardiovascular disease has become more prevalent in those under the age of 60. According to CIS, the best way to fight cardiovascular disease is for a person to know their risk factors, such as family history or lifestyle, and to visit a cardiologist regularly to be checked because heart disease can strike before symptoms are noticed.
Space for the Feb. 13 cardiovascular screening is limited, and registration is required. To reserve a spot, visit cismMERfeb13.eventbrite.com. For more information, call 985-873-5058.
