MOULTRIE – Thomas County Central’s final wrestling tuneup before the Region 1-6A duals did not transpire the way head coach Matt Tanner had hoped. But he still believes his Yellow Jackets will have a chance to advance to state.
“The top two (teams) will advance to the state duals,” Tanner said. “Lee County and Tift County are the favorites for those top two spots, but if we wrestle well and get a couple of folks healthy and in the right weight class this week, we will have a chance.”
Central finished in sixth place at the Colquitt County duals on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets lost to Lincoln (Fla.) 46-30, defeated Veterans 39-35 and Lowndes 39-36 and lost to Ware County 46-32 and to Valdosta 46-32.
“We didn’t do as well as we were capable of as a team,” Tanner said. “Freshman Wade Clark (132-pound weight class) continues to improve and had a big win against Lowndes that helped us seal the deal. Senior Jaxon Ward (126) had a great day and went undefeated.”
Central will compete in the region duals on Saturday, Jan. 13 at Lee County.
