MOULTRIE — “Keeping the Struggle Alive” is this year’s theme for Moultrie’s Third Annual Juneteenth Fest, which will be a two-day event held Friday and Saturday, June 14-15.
The keynote speaker for the event Saturday will be Dr. Carl Camon, a former candidate for governor of Georgia. He’s the first African American to serve as Ray City’s mayor, a position he’s held for five terms. He is a United States Air Force veteran and a retired educator. He received his bachelor, master and education specialist degrees from Valdosta State University and his doctorate from Christ Theological Seminary in Yonkers, New York.
He is married to Pastor Angela Camon and they have been married for 33 years. They have four children and several grandchildren.
Other speakers that are scheduled to appear Saturday include City Councilwoman Lisa Clarke Hill, Doerun City Councilman Willie D. Slaughter Jr., Minister Frederick Stafford, Pastor Alfredo Cenciweraso, Pastor Mack Davis and Pastor Luther Woodruff, who will present the “I Have a Dream” speech.
Saturday’s activities will be held downtown, on the courthouse square, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be food, vendors, bounce houses, nine-hole golf and waterslides. Entertainment will include praise dancers and choirs.
Other activities include a Juneteenth concert Friday at the Arts Center of Moultrie, 401 Seventh Ave. S.W. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m.
The concert will feature recording artist Deborah Snipes and the Angels, recording artist Kelvin Lundy of Jacksonville, Florida, and Moultrie’s own Thessie Baker. For tickets call (229) 429-5263.
