CRESAPTOWN — Calvary improved to 3-0 on the season, defeating Broadfording at home on Friday 2-1.
Broadfording has players from several countries including Argentina, Brazil, South Korea, Venezuela, Panama, Columbia and the Dominican Republic.
“The Broadfording team is very talented and have a lot of upperclassman compared to the very young Calvary team,” Calvary assistant coach Bill Scritchfield said. “But the Calvary team came out and played a hard fought game, and left everything on the field in a total team effort.”
Broadfording scored first at the 12:07 mark when Paulo Filpo tapped in a misplaced ball bouncing around in front of the goal.
The Eagles responded at the 39:20 mark. Sammy Scritchfield sent a free kick about 35 yards and curved it over the goalie’s hands to tie the score at halftime.
At the 47:07 mark of the second half, Gerald Mihailovich placed a corner kick, and Scritchfield’s header found the left corner of the goal for the game’s eventual winning goal.
“With over 30 minutes left in the game the Calvary defense stepped up and were solid in stopping the Broadfording attack,” Coach Scritchfield said. “The back line consisting of Brady Morgan, Gerald Mihailovich, Silas Leith, and Chais Murphy were solid. Elijah Ziler, Sammy Scritchfield, and Riley O’Brien gave everything they could in the midfield helping their team.”
Broadfording finished with a 14-9 edge in shots while the Eagles had a 9-7 advantage in corners.
Peyton Poland saved 12 shots for the second consecutive game, while Broadfording’s Nazarene Latrobe stopped three shots.
Calvary heads to Bishop Walsh on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
