THOMASVILLE – The Brookwood girls’ first region game of the season on Friday went the same way the previous 10 did – a Brookwood victory.
Led by Abigail Squires’ 12 points and Maddie Duncan’s 15, the Lady Warriors toppled the Tiftarea Lady Panthers 43-32 in their GISA Region 3-AAA opener.
“It wasn’t a pretty win, but it was a win,” Brookwood girls coach Jerry Ridley said. “I’d rather win ugly than lose pretty. Give Tiftarea a lot of credit, they played hard.”
Brookwood won despite missing nine free throw attempts, though it made its last seven in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
“We didn’t shoot free throws very good. We didn’t rebound very good. We got in foul trouble real good,” Ridley said.
Ainsley Jacobson converted seven free throws and finished with seven points, while Morgan Boggs added six.
Brookwood will return to the hardwood on Tuesday to play at region rival Terrell Academy. Though the Lady Warriors are undefeated, there is still much room for improvement, says Ridley.
“We’ve got a lot of improvement in us. We’ve played (well) in spurts, which we did tonight, but we’ve got a lot of improving left to do,” Ridley said. “We played pretty good defense. I tell the girls that if your offense is off, you play hard, rebound and play good defense, you’re going to be in a ballgame. That’s kind of how we have played all year. We haven’t been real smooth on offense all year, but we will.”
