SARANAC LAKE — The Beekmantown girls’ hockey team continued to put games in the win column over the weekend by capturing the championship in the Sara-Placid Tournament.
The Eagles needed overtime to edge Canton, 1-0, in Friday’s opening round before skating to an 8-2 victory over host SLP in the title contest on Saturday.
Against Canton, Katie McCormick tallied the game-winning goal at 1:53 of the extra session, with Amaya Abellard assisting. Bailey Barnett recorded the shutout in net with 13 saves.
“It was a hard-fought battle on the ice,” Beekmantown coach Al Ruest said. “Despite our numerous attempts on goal, we managed to only muster 17 shots. Our defense was solid and Bailey Barnett delivered some crucial saves when we needed them.
“I felt we took control of the game in overtime skating 3-on-3. Although the score was close, I felt we were strong overall and effectively minimized our opponent’s scoring chances.”
Then against SLP, Abellard led the way with two goals and two assists, and Ellie Fullum added two goals. Kylee Surprenant, Meegan Burdo, Ava Perry and McCormick also tallied goals. Kori-Lynne Lamoy picked up the win in net with 17 saves.
“It was a solid performance from the team tonight, showcasing a strong offensive effort,” Ruest said. “It was particularly exciting to see some of our younger players step up and contribute to the scoring.
“Ava Perry, who centers the freshmen duo of Marin Juneau and Reese Peryer, played a key role in netting a couple of goals. Freshman Ellie Fullum also scored two goals herself.
“The coaches were especially pleased with the power-play effectiveness tonight, led by Adyson Campbell’s excellent quarterbacking. Overall, it was a great display of teamwork and skill.”

BOYS
RICE MEMORIAL, VT. 2
SARANAC 1, OT
PLATTSBURGH — Saturday’s non-league overtime contest will go down as one of the best hockey games of the season locally.
Oliver Quong’s short-handed goal at 1:56 of overtime gave the Knights the win over the Spartans (4-2-1).
The first two periods were scoreless before Walter Morris gave Rice the lead 1:35 into the third.
It appeared the Knights were on their way to the win in regulation, but Ashtyn Catlin’s shot from just inside the blue line tied it for Saranac with 0.2 seconds left in the third.
Saranac went on a power play early in overtime, but Quong got behind the Spartans’ defense, skated down the left side and sent a shot into the upper corner of the net.
Henry Monaghan stopped 29 shots in net for Rice and Shawn McLane made 27 saves for Saranac.
“Other than the second period, I thought we played a good game,” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said. “Rice Memorial is a deep team and has good goaltending. They are the defending Vermont State Champions for a reason.
“Shawn (McLane) was great in goal for us and gave us every opportunity possible to win the game. But we turned a puck over in the offensive zone that gave them a breakaway in overtime.
“There are many positives we can take away from this game. This is the second game in a row we’ve had to play from behind and fight back to force overtime.”

BFA-ST. ALBANS, VT. 4
NORTHEASTERN CLINTON 1
ST. ALBANS, Vt. — Oliver Horton scored two goals Friday night to lead Bellows Free Academy to a non-league win over the Cougars.
BFA scored three of its goals in the first period to take a 3-0 lead.
The BFA win overshadowed a 51-save performance in net by NCCS’ Greyson Lafountain. Josh Seymour’s goal early in the third period cut the Cougars’ deficit to 3-1.
“We were very, very sluggish and the effort was poor when we hit the ice in the first period,” NCCS coach Scott Lafountain said. “When you play a team like BFA, you can’t have these starts.
“The boys, however, did bounce back for the second and third periods, but we still need to find a way to generate some offense. Getting 12 shots on goal for a game isn’t enough to compete at a high school level.
“Defensively, we did a great job forcing many of their shots to come from the outside and freshman goaltender Greyson Lafountain had a strong performance stopping 51 shots. We will need a much better start when we play Plattsburgh High in a league game on Thursday.”

BURNT HILLS/BALLSTON SPA 4
PLATTSBURGH 2
SCHENECTADY — The Hornets scored two goals late in the second period to cut their deficit to 3-2 in the non-league game on Friday.
It then stayed that way until Burnt Hills/Ballston Spa tallied its fourth goal with nine seconds left in the third.
Ben Bezio and Braeden Calkins each accounted for a goal and assist for PHS and Owen Chapple made 21 saves in net.
“We had a poor start to the game getting in the box and having to play from behind early, but I thought we played hard and battled the rest of the way,” PHS coach Joe Tolosky said.
“We had some costly mistakes in this one that we’ll learn from. We’re a young team in that regard and trying to learn from every lesson. Burnt Hills was a good challenge for us and we’ll be better for it down the road.”

STORM 3
PLATTSBURGH 1
SCHENECTADY — Guilderland/Mohonasen/Scotia-Glenville/Voorheesville/Schalmont scored two goals in the first period and held on for a non-league win over the Hornets on Saturday.
Chase Laravia’s goal off assists from Ben Bezio and Braeden Calkins pulled PHS to within 2-1 early in the third period, but the Storm added an empty-net goal with 29 seconds remaining to seal it.
Owen Chapple made 21 saves for the Hornets, who held a 37-24 advantage in shots on goal.
“This one was tough to swallow,” PHS coach Joe Tolosky said. “I thought we controlled most of the game, but again we didn’t have the start we wanted — and they took advantage of it.
“We certainly had our scoring chances, but just couldn’t capitalize. Credit to their goaltender for a big game in net.
“For us, this weekend stressed the importance of competing for all 51 minutes. We’ve got to learn from that now turning our focus to league play.”
