PLATTSBURGH — It was a tough weekend for the Eagles as they faced two strong teams from Section VI in Grand Island and Kenmore East.
In Saturday’s contest, Beekmantown fell to Grand Island, 10-2. This was followed up with a 5-4 loss to Kenmore East.
While both games were losses for Eagles, head coach Justin Frechette said it is a growing and learning experience for his team.
Saturday
Things got ugly early as Grande Isle scored seven unanswered goals before Beekmantown got on the board.
In the latter portion of the second period, Zach LaPier found Louis Sweenor on a power play to stop the bleeding and avoid the shut out.
Sweenor would score the second goal for the Eagles as well as he was fed the puck by Parker Broughton late in the final frame.
Both Ashton Laurin and Jack Bell saw action between the pipes and both did admirably when called upon. Laurin made 22 saves on 28 shots while Bell had 12 on 16 shots.
SUNDAY
Beekmantown wouldn’t let the previous night spoil any chance at victory against Kenmore East.
While the Bulldogs had a player record a hat-trick in Turnbull, the Eagles had one of their own in LaPier.
The pair would alternate goals in the first period with Turnbull opening up the score book.
Sweenor would again add his name to the scoresheet when he tied the contest in the final minutes of the first period.
The second period, however, was all Kenmore East. The Bulldogs would score three goals to put some breathing room between the teams, and it would take the Eagles all they could muster to rally.
They almost did as LaPier scored his second and third goals in the third period to bring Beekmantown within a goal, but they were unable to find the equalizer.
“I could not be more proud of our young team in the way they battled this afternoon against a senior laden team,” Frechette said. “We will continue to learn and improve each day as we work through the season.”
