PLATTSBURGH — To expand its reach and better support caregivers, the Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiver Support Initiative (ADCSI) has announced the launch of its new monthly podcast, Let’s Not Forget.
The podcast is hosted by Valarie Drown, the director of ADCSI, with each episode featuring insights from different expert guests.
“When we speak with caregivers, the first thing we often hear is they don’t know where to turn for resources. Our goal is to provide digestible pieces of information and direction to make caregiving a little less overwhelming,” Drown said.
“While we are talking about a heavy, serious topic, we also hope to bring some joy and levity to caregiving through this project.”
Each episode focuses on a different topic, with December’s episode highlighting “Your New Norm” with author Jim Comer, who tackles how to care for a parent or loved one that helped raise you. Future episodes will tackle issues such as how to plan for the unknown, make new memories and preserve your mental health and wellness. The end of every episode includes a tangible tip for caregivers to use.
“It’s so important for caregivers to know they are not alone. As a caregiver myself, I understand how difficult it can be to leave your loved one at home, especially at the beginning of your journey. The podcast gives caregivers the flexibility to listen on their own time,” Drown said.
Let’s Not Forget is available on YouTube and Spotify.
ADCSI provides free supportive services to those caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease and memory disorders, such as wellness programs, support groups and respite. In the past year, ADCSI has worked with approximately 700 caregivers, providing more than 180 new caregiver assessments.
