CUMBERLAND — The Allegany College of Maryland soccer programs opened its season on Tuesday, falling in a doubleheader to Montgomery.
The Trojans debuted a women’s soccer team for the first time in nearly 20 years, but fell to the Raptors 4-1.
The men’s team returned after not playing last fall, dropping the opener to Montgomery 6-1.
The men’s game ended early due to darkness, but the Raptors were in complete control.
Yoshuke Ono scored a pair of unassisted goals in the first half.
Caio Braga and Fabio Adanero also scored unassisted goals, putting Montgomery up 4-1 at halftime.
The Trojans (0-1) first goal of the season came at the 28:27 mark on a unassisted goal from Reel Kamba.
In the second half, Hanmin Kim added another unassisted goal for the Raptors, followed by Jonathan Khoun off a Jordan Sidney assist.
Montgomery outshot Allegany 16-3 and had a 5-2 edge in corners.
Levi Carrington saved seven shots for the Trojans while Xavier Mendia stopped two for the Raptors.
This game was the first time ACM was able to use its home field after renovations.
“With all the elements facing kind of against us, later start, pretty intense heat, new to the field with its recent renovations, we really did not show that any of these things even were a factor,” ACM head coach Mo Pratt said. “I was happy to see many of our guys have good games. Jace Patton had a really good game as well as Caedon Wallace — but truly many of our guys were showing that true skill prevails and it was noticeable for sure.”
The men’s team features nine area players out of 15 total.
Carrington was last year’s area Goalie of the Year at Calvary.
Wallace was the area’s Player of the Year for Allegany.
Patton earned the area’s Defensive Player of the Year, also for the Campers.
Owen Pratt and Sean Strawderman were first-team All-Area selections at Mountain Ridge.
Nathaniel Klemm, Riley McCutcheon, Harrison Reid and Jacob Wakefield also represent the Campers.
In the women’s game, Allie Scritchfield opened the scoring for the Trojans at the 43:55 mark of the first half on an unassisted goal.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Montgomery scored four unanswered goals in the second half.
At the 68:54 mark, Jeily Garmendez scored off a Natalie Zambrano assist.
Kendra Wotchuin scored two unassisted goals in less than a minute, then Emilia Webb added another unassisted goal.
Montgomery outshot Allegany 21-10 and had a 10-1 advantage in corners.
Hailee Jenkins saved nine shots for the Trojans while Nadia Estrada stopped four for the Raptors.
The area is also well represented on the women’s team.
Six of the 11 players hail from the area.
Jenkins was a first-team All-Area goalie at Hampshire last season.
Lexi Simpson was the area’s Defensive Player of the Year for Mountain Ridge.
Liliana Zembower (Fort Hill), Allie Scritchfield (Calvary), Adri Meadors (Allegany) and Karmen Whetzel (Petersburg) also represent the area.
Both teams head to Hagerstown on Thursday.
The women play at 3 p.m., followed by the men at 5 p.m.
