LAWRENCE — Firefighters battled a 3-alarm fire Saturday night on Kress Street that displaced 16 people.
About 8:40 p.m., first responders reported heavy fire showing from the top floor of the dwelling.
The blaze was quickly upgraded to a three-alarm fire, with mutual aid called in from North Andover, Methuen, Middleton, North Reading, Danvers and Tewksbury.
With assistance from North Andover, firefighters had to pump water from a hydrant near Commonwealth Motors up the hill to Kress Street, which is in the Prospect Hill neighborhood of the city.
The house was built in 1896 and is valued at about $424,000, according to city assessor’s records.
The American Red Cross was notified to help those displaced by the fire. It is not known if there were any injuries.
It appears that based on a video shot by a witness, the fire was mostly out by about 9:30 p.m.
